1880: Thomas Edison patents the electric incandescent lamp, which paves the way for universal domestic use of electric light. In all, Edison holds more than 1,000 patents, and many of his inventions contributed to mass communications, including a stock ticker, a voice recorder, motion pictures and recorded music.
